Our Client in Cleveland, Ohio is seeking a Director of Professional Development. This position will work collaboratively with Practice Group Leaders to further the Firm’s strategic objective of training and retaining attorneys to ensure quality and innovative legal services. The Director of Professional Development will develop Firm-wide and practice specific training programs and succession plans, manage all aspects of the attorney evaluation process, act as an integral part of the Mentoring Committee and Associate Development Committee, and manage the budget to fund professional development programs.

Essential Functions:

General Practice

  • Directs all aspects of the Firm's first year associate program relative to Legal Recruiting and Professional Development.
  • Assists General Practice Chair with all aspects of new attorney arrival, orientation and initial development.
  • Administers first year mentoring and development training under guidance of General Practice Chair.
  • Develops six month On-Boarding plan. Works with Department Chairs to develop plan and schedule meetings based upon department needs, Firm orientation, business development goals and general follow-up.
  • Plans, organizes and formally evaluates social events.

Counseling

  • Provides general counseling to legal staff to resolve job/career related concerns as appropriate.
  • Assists associates in creating individual career development plans.
  • Researches and evaluates Business Volunteers Unlimited and Cleveland Leadership programs including Bridge Builders and works with the Department Chairs to select appropriate candidates.

Training and Professional Development Programs

  • Directs all aspects of the Firm's professional development and training programs for legal staff.
  • Works with Department Chairs to establish core competencies for all levels of legal staff and develops training programs based upon these competencies.
  • Directs the administration of Partner and Associate professional development programs in the areas of mentoring, review and training. Ensures full communication with all related committee members and attorneys regarding professional development programs and activities.
  • Conducts formal exit interviews with exiting associates, reports results and recommends changes where appropriate.
  • Oversees the budget for continuing legal education.

Associate Development Committee

  • Develops meeting agendas.
  • Works with the Associate Development Committee in scheduling Quality of Life programs.
  • Researches and coordinates speakers for the monthly ADC meetings.
  • Assists the ADC with the development of upward evaluations.
  • Performs research and develops the agenda for the Associate Retreat.

Mentoring Committee

  • Works with the Committee and participants to develop annual goals and plans.
  • Continually monitors the mentoring program for success. Works with participants to see how their involvement is proceeding.
  • Schedules meetings, roundtables and sets agendas for the Committee.
  • Researches and provides updates to the Committee with regard to the latest developments on mentoring programs and issues.
  • Develops programming for the Committee, mentors and mentees.
  • Provides training for mentors regarding counseling and competitive intelligence.
  • Assigns mentor/mentee pairings.

Diversity Committee

  • Works with Diversity Committee on Diversity Initiatives and develops annual group goals and plans.
  • Schedules meetings and sets the agenda.
  • Develops programming and training for the Committee and for the Firm based upon committee goals and objectives.
  • Researches and provides updates to the Committee regarding the latest developments on diversity issues.
  • Coordinates with the Hiring Committee on Firm diversity initiatives.

Women's Initiative Committee

  • Works with Women's Steering Committee to develop annual group goals and plans.
  • Schedules Women's Initiative Committee meetings and sets the agenda.
  • Develops programming for the Committee and for the Firm based upon committee goals and objectives.
  • Researches and provides updates to the Committee regarding the latest developments on women's initiative programs and issues.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree; JD or advanced degree preferred.
  • Experience in leading a professional development program required.
  • Must be a creative and innovative thinker, and have demonstrated leadership, organizational, problem-solving and interpersonal skills.
  • Must possess a strong desire to mentor and coach attorneys.
  • Strong computer skills and a customer service attitude are required.
  • Must be open to 15-20% travel
